Wabi-Sabi Chair

Project type:

Chair Design and Construction

Final Presentation Video

This project reimagines the chair as more than a functional object,
transforming it into an extension of the human experience.

Inspired by the Japanese philosophy of “wabi-sabi”, which finds beauty in
imperfection and impermanence, the chair embodies complex emotions
such as stress, anxiety, and the fear of the unknown.

These emotions, though often seen as negative, are intrinsic to the human
condition.

Rather than eliminating them, the project emphasizes acknowledgment and
balance through mindfulness, meditation, and grounding practices.

Drawing from personal experiences of emotional overwhelm and the search
for clarity, this exploration seeks to integrate principles of presence and
self-awareness into the design.

The goal is to create a chair that not only provides physical support but also
fosters emotional grounding, encouraging disconnection from technology
and reconnection with deeper motivations—our “why”.

By embracing the “wabi-sabi” ethos, the chair invites users to find meaning
in imperfection, cultivating a sense of calm and personal growth in the face
of life’s uncertainties.
